The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)

While “Hill House” is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic novel “The Haunting of Hill House,” when Netflix revealed Season 2 was titled “Bly Manor,” the streaming service pretty much confirmed it will be a retelling of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.”

The 1898 horror novella is a story within a story, which is told by an unnamed narrator listening to his friend Douglas read a manuscript on Christmas Eve that was penned by a now-deceased governess.
Victoria Pedretti, who played Nell Crain on “Hill House,” will have the leading role of Dani on “Bly Manor,” “a governess who takes care of two very unusual children.” But that’s about all we know about the cast for now.

In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their children – Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Nell – move into Hill House to renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, due to unexpected repairs, they have to stay longer, and they begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena that results in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house.
Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after tragedy strikes again, and they are forced to confront how their time in Hill House had affected each of them.

When a shadowy figure from Deion's past returns to haunt his present at the worst possible time, it threatens the lives of him and his newfound friends.

Actually a great season! Much better than S1/S2

Rocketman (2019)

Rated R for language throughout, some drug use and sexual content

Quote:An epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years.

It's a straightforward rock star biopic, but one done with a lot of flair and an eye for presentation. What I loved was the "broad strokes" approach it took to telling the story of Elton John, with most of the movie being him recounting his hazy, conflicted memories of his childhood and career while at the darkest moment of his life, instead of claiming to be historically accurate and falling into the trap that Bohemian Rhapsody did (or being too dry like Jersey Boys). Taron Egerton also made for a great Elton John, especially given how different he was from the Kingsman movies; mark my words, he's gonna be a star. It didn't really do anything new, but it did it well, and that was what put it over the top.

My full review is here.

  Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 (2004)
Posted by: Repo - 07-04-2019, 04:43 PM - Forum: Video Games - No Replies

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 is the sequel to 2004's Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines, currently in development by Hardsuits Labs and published by Paradox Interactive, scheduled to release in 2020.  Quite a few of the developers on the original game, most prominently designer & writer Brian Mitsoda and composer Rik Schaffer, have returned for this game. The game additionally features Cara Ellison and Chris Avellone as writers.

Fifteen years after the events in Los Angeles, on a foggy night in Seattle, vampires swoop down from the rooftops in Pioneer Square and conduct a mass embrace, converting a group of humans into so-called "Thin-Bloods." It's a dangerous and illegal act. Abandoned to the world, these bewildered and naïve Thin-Bloods threaten the Masquerade, the elaborate social pact that prevents humans from finding out about vampires.

As one of these Thin-Bloods yourself, you're captured and brought to trial. Wheeled before a council of the governing vampire clans, you're asked to recall the events of that night in Pioneer Square, and thus expose the culprits behind this terrible deed. Your reward for cooperating? Execution. Except it all goes wrong. The trial implodes as the council members squabble amongst themselves, and an unexplained fire breaks out and engulfs the room. You take the opportunity to flee into the night, resolving to try and uncover who did this to you, and why. If you’re lucky, you’ll survive long enough to find out.

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines (2004)
Posted by: Repo - 07-04-2019, 04:27 PM - Forum: Video Games - No Replies

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines is the final game made by Troika Games, composed of the Black Isle exiles responsible for Fallout and Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura. An FPS/RPG hybrid, many consider it the worthiest successor to Deus Ex

The game takes place in the Old World of Darkness. In the Anarch-controlled city of Los Angeles, the player character is a newly-Embraced vampire... and it would seem an illicitly-embraced one, as well. After their sire gets offed for Embracing a mortal without the permission of LaCroix, the newly instated Camarilla Prince of Los Angeles, the PC finds themselves trying to prove their worth by becoming LaCroix's errand runner. They become embroiled in local vampire politics and meet a wide cast of characters in their quest to track down an ancient sarcophagus.

Thanks to a very troubled production, the game had the makings of an obvious beta when it was released, suffering from numerous critical bugs and other problems, and although quite a few was fixed by patches, Troika went under shortly after the release, resulting in many of them remaining unaddressed (though some employees did stay on, unpaid, to put out a single official patch to squash some of them). Luckily, a small dedicated modding community around the game has fixed most of these over the years through Unofficial Patches[Image: external_link.gif].
Despite the obvious beta aspects, many consider the game to be an incredibly fun, deeply rewarding experience that any fan of PC-RPG's like Deus Ex would enjoy. So much so that the games community is still active to this day, and is always embracing new players who display an interest in the game.
