Halloweentown (1998)

Rated TV-G

Quote:Marnie and her siblings get a big shock when they follow Grandma home to Halloweentown -- and find out they come from a family of witches. The town is the only place where supernatural beings can lead a "normal" life, but trouble is looming, and on her 13th birthday Marnie not only finds she is a witch, but that she and her family are involved in a fight against the evil that is threatening to take over the world.

I had never seen any of these movies growing up, even though I was smack dab in the middle of the age bracket they were targeted to, and having enjoyed Hocus Pocus when I watched it for the first time last month, I decided to give them a shot. On the first one: it's corny, but I was pleasantly surprised. It felt like Harry Potter meets The Nightmare Before Christmas, a silly and enjoyable family comedy that's at its best when it's bringing the viewer into its world of fantasy and monsters, enough to make up for some lame jokes and, save for Debbie Reynolds (who was always one of the best things about these films), a cast that didn't really come into its own until the second film.

My full review is here.
